August Cellars was founded in 2002 by members of the third and fourth generations of the August Schaad family, with the twin goals of creating exceptional wine at a fair price and preserving the legacy of their family farm for future generations. The building was built larger than we needed in order to also provide a space for other winemakers to follow their passion and over the years has been home to eleven different wineries.
With a production of around 2500 cases per year, August Cellars offers a range of wines including Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Maréchal Foch, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. Recognizing that different wines suit different occasions and palates, their robust and flavorful wines are designed to be enjoyed with food and loved ones.
The winery's name honors the memory of August Schaad, who emigrated to the US from Southern Germany in the 1890s and established a family farm on Parrett Mountain, where he and his wife Anna raised seven children and were prominent members of the local community of Rex.
August Cellars is located on the farmland that Clarence Schaad, August and Anna's oldest child, purchased in 1942. Today, Clarence's two surviving children, Lewis and Grace, both retired teachers, tend to the orchards of walnuts and prunes on the farm.
The winery was initially run by Jim and Tom Schaad, Lewis's two sons, with Jim serving as the winemaker and Tom overseeing the winery's daily operations. In 2020 Jim passed away, leaving Tom and his nephews, Alex and Matthew with the wineries' legacy.
